I was asked to come up with a list of 5 things that I would recommend when visiting Paris. Below are the top 5 that I think are inescapable when you find yourself in the city of love!
1. Stay in Montmartre. Not only is it a beautiful area, with streets of cobblestones and cafés on every corner, there are also endless street artists for your entertainment and you may even get a caricature done (not for a very cheap price though, I might add!) At night, you can enjoy a nice stroll through the lit up streets, have a nice meal in a classy restaurant accompanied by live music (also, very talented musicians!), and end the night by getting a crepe from a stand on the street! It was definitely one of my favourite places from my 2014 Europe trip and I would recommend it to absolutely everyone I know, if they were planning a trip to France!

C’est non seulement une belle région, avec ses rues pavés et des cafés à chaque coin, mais il ya aussi des artistes de rue sans fin pour votre divertissement et vous pouvez même obtenir une caricature. Pendant la nuit, vous pourrez profiter d’une belle promenade à travers les rues éclairées, avoir un bon repas dans un restaurant chic accompagné par de la musique live (aussi, des musiciens très talentueux!), et finir la nuit en obtenant une crêpe d’un stand dans la rue! C’était certainement l’un de mes endroits préférés de mon voyage en Europe en 2014 et je le recommande à absolument tout le monde que je connais, si ils avaient l’intention d’un voyage en France!

2. Visit the top of the Eiffel Tower. It may seem like a cliché tourist attraction, but after having visited Paris around 6 or 7 times, I finally went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I have to say, it was one of the most spectacular views I have personally ever seen. It may take some time to get through the queue but it’s only 10€ or so, which is approximately $15 to travel 301 metres up into the sky, and you don’t even have to walk the whole way! If you do decide to stop at the first floor though, you can still test your willpower by standing over the glass floor which looks down upon all the ant-sized people below you (after some time, I managed to do it and overcame my fear of falling from high up!) and if that’s not far enough, the second floor has a nice café and benches for you to relax before climbing back down (stairs and lifts are both available up until the second floor)
2. Visitez le sommet de la Tour Eiffel. Il peut sembler comme une attraction touristique très cliché, mais après avoir visité Paris environ 6 ou 7 fois, j’ai finalement atteint le sommet de la Tour Eiffel. Je dois vous dire que ce fut l’une des vues les plus spectaculaires que j’ai personnellement vu. Ça peut prendre un certain temps pour passer à travers la file d’attente, mais ça coute seulement 10€, ce qui est environ $15 à voyager 301 mètres dans le ciel, et vous n’avais même pas besoin de marcher tout le chemin! Si vous décidez d’arrêter au premier étage cependant, vous pouvez toujours tester votre volonté en se tenant debout sur le plancher de verre qui domine sur tout monde (en taille de fourmis) ci-dessous vous (après un certain temps, je suis parvenu à le faire et surmonté ma peur de tomber d’une hauteur!) et si ce n’est pas aussi haut pour vous, le deuxième étage a un joli café et des bancs pour vous détendre avant de descendre en bas (des escaliers et des ascenseurs sont à la fois disponibles jusqu’au deuxième étage).
3. Go for a walk along the Seine in the early morning. I would advise bringing a friend or family member with you if you were to do this, just in case! However, I haven’t been anywhere as calm as the Seine at 6am. If you get a nice morning when it’s not too chilly, you could spend hours roaming the streets before the hustle and bustle of Paris picks up. Bakeries are generally open from 6:30 or 7, so you can stop off and get a croissant with your early morning coffee (or in my case, a pain au chocolat with a hot chocolate) Finish off your morning with a light jog around, maybe stop off and take some pictures if you have a phone or camera handy and head back to your apartment/hotel room to get ready for the rest of the day!
3. Faites une promenade le long de la Seine au petit matin. Je vous conseille de prendre un ami ou un membre de la famille avec vous si vous allez le faire, juste au cas où! Cependant, je n’ai jamais experiencer quelque choses aussi calme que la Seine à 6h du matin. Si vous obtenez un joli matin quand il ne fais pas trop froid, vous pouvez passer des heures à vous baladez dans les rues avant l’agitation de Paris se ramasse. Les boulangeries sont généralement ouverts de 6h30 ou 7h, vous pouvez donc arrêter et acheter un croissant avec votre café du matin (ou dans mon cas, un pain au chocolat avec un chocolat chaud) Terminez votre journée par un jogging léger, peut-être vous arrêtez et prendre quelques photos, si vous avez un téléphone ou un appareil photo avec vous et retournez à votre appartement / chambre hôtel pour vous préparez pour le reste de la journée!
4. Visit the Van Gogh exhibition at the “Musée D’Orsay”. Although there are many museums to visit in Paris, my family opted for the “Musée D’Orsay” while we were over there. At first, I was a little bit overwhelmed at the amount of artwork in there, but I decided to split off from my family and just roam. We were there for a good 3 or 4 hours, and I still couldn’t take it all in. Sculptures, paintings, drawings…any form of written art you could find was there! My favourite part of the entire museum (as you could most likely tell from the title of this dot point), was the Van Gogh section. His paintings have fascinated me, and it was definitely the busiest part of the museum! A must-see if you’re in the area. (ps: my favourite painting by Van Gogh is “The Starry Night”, what’s yours?)
4. Visite de l’exposition Van Gogh au “Musée d’Orsay”. Bien qu’il existe de nombreux musées à visiter à Paris, ma famille a opté pour le “Musée d’Orsay” pendant que nous étions là-bas. Au début, j’était un peu submergé par la quantité d’œuvres d’art là-dedans, mais j’ai décidé de me séparer de ma famille et juste me promener. Nous étions là pour 3 ou 4 heures, et je ne pouvais toujours pas tout apprécier. Sculptures, peintures, dessins … toute forme d’art écrit que vous pourriez trouver était là! Ma partie préférée de l’ensemble du musée (comme vous pouvez probablement comprendre du titre de ce point), était la section Van Gogh. Ses peintures me fascinent, et c’était certainement la partie la plus occupée du musée! A voir absolument si vous êtes dans le coin. (ps: mon tableau préféré de Van Gogh est “La nuit étoilée”, ce qui est le vôtre?)
5. Walk “Les Champs-Elysées”. It may seem a little cliché, like climbing the Eiffel Tower was, but it is really a marvellous experience. Not only do you get to see all of the expensive shops that you just long to shop in, but it’s a little bit of exercise after the big lunch you most likely had at a restaurant beforehand (personally, we just had some Chinese food in a little takeaway shop) The chain names range from Chanel, to Tiffany & Co., even to McDonald’s (which was unsurprisingly, very busy). Also, to end your walk (depending on which end you start at), you can visit the Arc De Triomphe and also climb up it, if you’re willing!
5. Marché “Les Champs-Elysées”. Ça peut sembler un peu cliché, comme l’escalade de la Tour Eiffel, mais c’est vraiment une expérience merveilleuse. Non seulement vous pouvez voir toutes les boutiques de luxe dans lesquelles vous voulez faire du shopping, mais ca vous permet aussi de faire de l’exercice après le grand déjeuner que vous avez probablement eu dans un restaurant à l’avance (personnellement, nous avons juste acheter un peu de nourriture chinoise dans une petite boutique de plats à emporter) La noms de chaine vont de Chanel, à Tiffany & Co., même à McDonald (qui était sans surprise, très occupé). A la fin de votre promenade (selon d’où vous avez commencer), vous pouvez visiter l’Arc de Triomphe et aussi la monter, si vous êtes prêt!
As it’s our last week of French in year 11, we all went to Copenhagen as our last excursion together. For those of you who don’t know, Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, however that isn’t the Copenhagen I’m talking about! In Australia, there is a Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery and Dessert Bar, which is very popular. The menu ranges from savoury and sweet pancakes, to ice cream, to donuts, to crepes, to fondues and lastly, affogatos. There are also “creations”, which include banana splits, tarte tatins, meringues and brownies. Their drinks include milkshakes, thick shakes, smoothies, iced chocolates, tea, coffee and more! It really was a wonderful bonding experience and we got to stuff our faces with food at the same time!
